Outdoor Wednesday - 4/8 - Rural Community

Welcome to Outdoor Wednesday. Spring has just been the perfect time to visit blogs. Head over to see Susan at The Southern Daydreamer.

Last Sunday, we decided on the spur of the moment to go on a Sunday excursion after church. We grabbed a quick meal at Sonic (Boo's favorite place). He can highly recommend the grilled cheese. After Sonic, we were off!

We visited several different towns and of course, I had my camera. Today, we're going to visit a sawmill town in northern Louisiana.

Fisher was established in 1899 as a Sawmill operation. It was a "company town" built for the employees of the Louisiana Long Leaf Lumber Company. "The village was and is bisected by the KCS Railroad with the more pretentious homes for sawmill management on one side of the tracks and employee homes of lesser proportions on the other side. Traditional box frame houses were surrounded by whitewashed and planked fences. Unique were the wooden sidewalks in front of the homes and connecting the buildings."

Here's a few of the buildings which are still standing. You can click on any picture to enlarge it.

The Commissary was the local store for the company. It's now an antique store.

I love the Opera house! It was the only place to view movies in the area and tour companies also performed here. One top performer was Hank Williams! The Opera house is still used for programs, etc.

The Post Office is still in operation!

My favorite building in the village is the church. I think this is one of the prettiest white frame churches. I love white churches and this one is special.

Many of the homes are still standing on both sides of the track. Here's a favorite:

I love the outdoor fireplace. If we had more colder weather, I would make this a project!

Check back tomorrow for Tablescape Thursday. I don't have a clue but I'll come up with something!

Oh what a lovely trip! My family and I used to go to a church building located in the middle of a glorious community. So each after church, we would drive around admiring all the different landscapes and maturing trees every week. I miss that!

If you have more outdoor adventures, you can also join in on Sightseeing Saturday where you can feature great places to see where you live! It's hosted by Christine or Xinex!
