Tableware Thursday - 2/19 - Shenango China Memories

Welcome to Tablescape Thursday hosted by Susan at Between Naps on the Front Porch. There are always oodles of people playing (I mean participating). Blogging is serious business you know!

That last line was for Mr. Dumpling who hasn't caught on to the responsibility of blogging. He thinks I might be addicted or even worse, wasting time. I take this seriously. It takes time and dedication. Yes, he reads my blog so my apologies for airing our dirty laundry for the world to see. ;-)

Today, I decided to use some plates which I treasure. These belonged to my paternal grandfather known as Pa Pat.

He was a creature of habit and my grandmother put these on the table every day for him. It kept his mashed potatoes separate from his field peas. He put ketchup on his potatoes but I digress. He was such a character so let's have fun with his dishes!

I have four and wish I had more. I just can't bring myself to spend $25 plus each on eBay. I'm hoping for a bargain.

The plates are grill plates. Don't these make you think of those diners in the 1950's where you got the blue plate special for the day? They were made by Shenango probably in the 1920's - 1930's.

The scene on the plate is just adorable. The carriage is pulling in to a home or rest stop called the Red Lion.

Today, I brought in some of my cranberry glass. I love sugar shakers and this is one of my favorites. I fell in love with sugar shakers after a plantation tour. The original owner had a fabulous collection!

I only have one cruet in the cranberry. I definitely need another but I just love the crystal top. Both are probably made by Fenton in the coin dot/spot pattern.

The cranberry pitcher is Fenton and is in the Daisy and Fern pattern.

The napkin and placemat were bought several years ago from Dillards (big sale).

The silver is First Love by Rogers. Mr. Dumpling found this at our friend's "junque" shop before a Christmas party several years ago. I have gradually added to it.

Here's a closer look.

The crystal goblets are also First Love and made by Duncan & Miller to match the silver. There are so many pieces of the crystal that I want but I will have to gradually add them.

The pattern is so hard to get in focus so here's a different shot:

The little picture just adds just "love" to the table.

Friday is Show and Tell Friday. Hmm, I need to start looking don't I?

I love your table! How sweet to honor your loved one like this. The dishes are so pretty and it's great with the dividers in there. I don't like my juices to mix either on my plate. The napkins are great and love how you've folded them. I could go on and on. I just love it all!
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Well, I have to say your dishes would look just lovely with my dining room draperies. I love the way you paired them with a stripe napkin. Charming, for sure.

Beautiful setting - but an especially fun remembrance. I needed that plate for my daughter who, growing up and still today, never liked for her food to touch! Linda

I've never seen divided china like that! When I got married my mother said it was a shame they didn't make it because I always wanted sauces and runny foods on the side. Like Sally in "When Harry met Sally." What a great table! Love the flatware and the crystal and had never heard of them! :D Jewel

What a lovely table! I am really just becoming intrigued with tableware from the past, and I love the Fenton piece of cranberry. I made my first purchase of some green depression glass sherbert cups last week, and can't wait to include them for TT next week!!

In the meantime...looking for a couple more pieces and totally enjoying the inspiration of talented ladies like you!!!

Love your blog and will follow so I can continue to drink it in!!

Joyful Blessings,
Becky

Have seen a lot of divided china before, but not that pretty, and wonderful that there are nice memories that go along with the plates.

What fun! I love how you have totally transformed the look of the transferware by choosing more trendy place mats and napkins. That is the joy of tablescaping, isn't it? Love what you have done. Also love the silverware and the cranberry glass. AND what a fun way you folded those napkins.

Thanks for coming for a visit at my blog. I'll look for you again!

Judy Bug, what a special table! You did a great job with it. I've never seen plates with the divisions like those, so that has got to make them much more collectible than regular transferware.

I love how you folded your napkin... very clever!

The whole table had a great feel.

XO,

Sheila :-)

Oh, I absolutely love this tablescape. Such sweet memories. I would love to have those seperated dishes, I think I'm like your grandfather and I really hate it when all my food mixes up. Such a lovely post and all the dishes are just wonderful. Hugs, Marty

Hi, Miss Judybug!

What a beautiful placesetting/tablescape!
I think your Pa Pat's dishes are much too nice for a diner, though. I always think of diners having melmac dishes -- yours are lovely.
I also love your Pa Pat's tie!
And I don't blame him a bit for wanting his food separated -- I used to have a reall problem with that. Took me years to get over it!

I had a great grandfather we called Pa (we pronounced it "Paw" -- Is that how you pronounced yours?)

Oh! We pronounce Natchitoches -- "Nak-i-tish". One of our favorite cities in the United States (We don't travel the world -- that's why I just say in the United States!)
Man, I ramble on....

Blessings,
Julie
